If you’re traveling through Egypt and only have two days to spare in Cairo, don’t worry—you can still experience so much of the magic this city has to offer! From marveling at the ancient Giza Pyramids to wandering the historic streets of Old Cairo and soaking in views of the Nile, two days is just enough to capture the essence of this vibrant destination. With a little planning, you’ll get to check off some of Egypt’s most iconic landmarks while uncovering the unique charm of Cairo’s culture and history.

Day 1: Pyramids & Old Cairo
Your first day is all about ticking off those huge bucket-list items. We're talking about standing in the shadow of the last remaining Wonder of the Ancient World and getting lost in the medieval markets of Old Cairo. It’s going to be epic.
Morning: The Great Pyramids of Giza
Let’s start with the main event. The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx are the reason many of us dream of visiting Egypt. My top tip is to get there right when they open, around 8:00 AM. This allows you to experience the complex before the massive tour buses arrive and before the desert sun gets too intense. There is a shuttle bus that takes you around to the different places within the complex, and lines do build up for them the later it gets.

Standing at the base of the Great Pyramid of Khufu is a humbling experience that photos can never truly capture. You can wander around the complex, take in the views of all three major pyramids, and get that classic photo with the Sphinx. It’s a moment you will never forget.
My favorite souvenir from a trip is investing in a professional photographer for the most memorable photos, so I would recommend getting them at the pyramids! This photographic journey experience was perfect and we got a little guidance exploring the area, and photos we'll cherish forever.
Lunch: A Meal with a View
After a morning of awe-inspiring sightseeing, you’ll have worked up an appetite. For a truly unforgettable meal, head to Khufu’s. This fine-dining restaurant is located directly on the Giza Plateau, offering sophisticated Egyptian cuisine with an unparalleled, direct view of the pyramids. It’s a splurge, but the experience of dining at the foot of ancient history is worth every penny.

Afternoon: Stroll Through Ancient History
After your delightful meal at Khufu’s, it’s time to continue your voyage through history by visiting the Grand Egyptian Museum, just a short car ride away. This newly built museum is the largest archaeological museum in the world and houses an unparalleled collection of ancient artifacts, including the complete treasure trove of King Tutankhamun. I recommend prioritizing the Tutankhamun gallery, Galleries 5, 9, 11, and Khufu's Solar boat - those were my favorite!
Evening: Exploring Old Cairo
Once you’re refreshed, it’s time to dive into the heart of Islamic Cairo. This part of the city feels like stepping back in time. Start your exploration at the magnificent Al-Hakem Mosque, an oasis of calm with a stunning, expansive courtyard. From there, get ready to haggle and wander through the labyrinthine alleyways of Khan El Khalili. This famous bazaar is a sensory explosion of shimmering lanterns, aromatic spices, and handcrafted souvenirs.

For solo travelers or people who would feel more comfortable with a guide, I highly recommend the Engage with Egyptian Life Tour. They do a great job at making you feel like you're a local wandering in Cairo and they help with haggling and keeping unwanted people away.
If you go with the tour, you'll get a taste of some traditional Egyptian food, but if you're still hungry after, make your way to Zeeyara. It’s a fantastic spot that serves modern takes on traditional Egyptian dishes. The vibrant atmosphere and delicious food provide the perfect end to a day of monumental sightseeing.
Day 2: Cultural Exploration & Nile Experience
Day two is dedicated to diving deeper into Egypt’s rich history and experiencing the lifeblood of the nation: the Nile River. We’ll explore ancient burial grounds, marvel at priceless artifacts, and end the day with an incredible local food experience.
Morning: Ancient History Overload
Since you'll be traveling a bit farther on day 2, I recommend hiring a private driver to take you around. It's pretty affordable, and you can create your own journey without worrying about transportation.
Start your day by heading out to the Saqqara Necropolis. This ancient burial ground is home to the Step Pyramid of Djoser, considered the world’s oldest major stone structure. It’s often less crowded than Giza and gives you a broader understanding of the evolution of pyramid-building.
On your way back into the city, swing around and stop at the beautiful Al Sahaba Mosque to admire its stunning and intricate architecture.

Lunch: Rooftop Relaxation
After a morning of intense historical immersion, you’ll want a relaxed lunch. Head to Mazeej Balad Rooftop. This spot offers fantastic views of the city skyline, a laid-back vibe, and a great menu of grilled specialties and mezze. It’s the perfect place to refuel on a relaxing rooftop.
Afternoon: Sail the Nile
No trip to Egypt is complete without experiencing the Nile River. Skip the noisy motorboats and opt for a traditional Felucca sailboat tour. These wind-powered boats offer a silent, peaceful journey along the water. An afternoon or sunset sail is particularly magical, allowing you to see the city lights begin to twinkle as the sun goes down. It's a serene escape from the city's hustle.

Evening: A Taste of Cairo
For your final evening, immerse yourself in the city's incredible food scene with a Local Cairo walking food tour. Navigating the streets and restaurants can be overwhelming, so having someone guide you through bustling backstreets to taste authentic dishes is my favorite way to explore a culture's cuisine, especially in a short amount of time.
With so much to see, do, and savor, Cairo is filled with ancient wonders and hidden culinary gems, every corner of the city promises a story worth experiencing.
